The Random DNA Sequence Generator is a free online tool for creating synthetic DNA sequences with customizable length and GC content. Generate random nucleotide sequences containing adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C), with support for sequences up to 1 million bases. Whether you need test data for bioinformatics software, genomics simulations, or educational exercises, this tool provides a fast and flexible way to create DNA sequences.
How to Generate a Random DNA Sequence
- Select DNA mode and enter your desired sequence length (1 to 1,000,000 bases).
- Adjust the GC content from 0% to 100% using the slider or numerical input.
- Click Generate to create your random DNA sequence.
- View, shuffle, or copy the result, or download it as a FASTA file.
Key Features
- Adjustable GC Content: Generate AT-rich, GC-rich, or balanced DNA sequences with your preferred nucleotide composition.
- Flexible Sequence Length: Create short DNA fragments or sequences containing up to 1 million bases.
- Customizable Display: Choose different line lengths, nucleotide grouping, position numbering, and letter case.
- FASTA Export: Download generated sequences in FASTA format for use with other bioinformatics applications.
- Fast, Browser-Based Generation: Generate and manage sequences directly in your browser without installing additional software.
Applications in Bioinformatics and Research
Random DNA sequences help test sequence analysis tools, evaluate bioinformatics workflows, prepare synthetic datasets, and demonstrate nucleotide composition.
After generating a sequence, you can explore its properties using our DNA Reverse Complement Tool, DNA Molecular Weight Calculator, or Palindromic Sequence Finder.
Note: Generated sequences are synthetic and are not guaranteed to represent functional genes or biologically active DNA.
Performance and Validation
In ScienceCodons’ internal October 2026 benchmark, the generator produced a 1-million-base DNA sequence in 19.29 milliseconds. Additional tests on 100,000-base sequences showed GC-content deviations below 0.15 percentage points across the evaluated settings. Performance may vary by device and execution environment.
