What is the role of NADPH in biology?

SHORT ANSWER: The NADPH molecule plays a role in synthetic functions and detoxification. Synthetic processes such as fatty acid biosynthesis, cholesterol production, neurotransmitter synthesis, and nucleotide formation rely on NADPH. Detoxification reactions, such as the glutathione pathway and cytochrome P450, also require NADPH.
