Hypokalemia, a condition characterized by low potassium levels in the blood, can lead to hypomagnesemia, a condition characterized by low magnesium levels in the blood. The exact mechanism of this relationship has yet to be fully understood, but it is believed that low levels of magnesium inside cells lead to the kidneys wasting potassium.
Hypomagnesemia often occurs with hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels) and hypokalemia (low blood potassium levels). Magnesium directly affects the balance of other electrolytes, such as sodium, calcium, and potassium.
Low blood magnesium levels can cause various symptoms, such as tremors, muscle spasms, abnormal eye movements, fatigue, weakness, seizures, delirium, and irregular heart rhythms.
